I develop internal software applications for a mid-sized company. For the most part our applications help to streamline day to day processes and are really just data entry front ends. I was once asked in an interview: "How do you know when you are finished?"
I know the anser was not: "Once every requirement has been fulfilled". I would assume the answer should include something on Performance, Reliability, Usability, Scalability. But even those areas themselves do not have a definitive end point. If I am ever asked this question again I think my response would be: "When the customer is satisfied over a determined period of time."
While that might mark completion, is that success? I guess to even a more abstract problem, "Can an application be successful even if the project is a failure?"
"Resolution be accident" seems to be common method of software development. By this method success is measured by the random forces of the universe colliding at a point where the application can be pushed out. But the underlying project is a failure. Why?
Such a project is a failure because it is unable to be reproduced. If you stumble upon a solution without understanding, there is a good change that you will run into the same issue down the road. Havign a 'fix' for the issue is an inadequate way to program since the underlying issue is never being dealt with.

Never any news
Songs remaining: 220
Currently Listening To: The Future Sound of London--> Dead Cities -->Antique Toy
With so much going on in the world, you'd think (especially you of all people) that I would write more. But really, what is there to say. Perhaps if I could build moment, some great post might come through. But as it stands now the pace is so bad not even a nugget falls out.

110039 Jumbles
QOD: I'd probably be in a cult right now if I wasn't so cynical
Songs Remaining: 1420
Currently Listening To: Mohamed bouya Mohamed --> Ilham Al Madfai -- > Bagdad Blues

Went to the Eddie Bravo seminar last weekend at SNEMMA.
4 hours
Lockdown --> Dogfight --> Pyramid --> Rubber Guard
It was very similar to the seminar I went to at Reality self Defense (now Lauzon MMA) in March except we spent no time on butterfly guard and very little on Rubbar Guard. Instead we worked on the Pyramid. (Need to find a picture) More to come...
The difference between the march seminar and this one was really seen in the improvement in my own rubbar guard game. I am confortable and consistantly able to get to chill dog and at least sweep or improve my position from there. I attribute that to my newest pseudo hobby: Yoga.
Improving flexibility is not seen as a big priority at my school, and until I went to the Bravo seminar last march, it wasn't for me either. But since i have tried to focus at least a few times a week to stretching, my flexibility has skyrocketed. Had I the ambition to make it a 7 days a week chore it'd probably be better. My new focus for this week is to do yoga or stretch at least 6 days a week for at least 45 minutes (Yoga should take care of that 3 times a week).

Danger of Abstraction
The idea of abstraction has a few very fundamental flaws. To wrangle out the essence of something you first assume that there is an essence to wrangle out. In assuming an 'essence' of things we assume the following:
1. Its existence
2. Its knowability
3. Its containment and limits
4. Its ability to be objectively defined
For the sake of argument, or maybe in order to start one, let's stipulate something. The essence of an object can never be directly accessed. It is not a value type. It can however, be referenced. I can refer to chairness even if that is tantamount to an empty concept.
I know however, by differentials whether or not something is a chair. The idea might dither at the ends but at its core essences should be able to separate out X form not X.
This is a work in progess.

September 30th
Songs Remaining: 2189
Currently Listening to: The Unsung Heros --> Unleashed --> Universal
Not much going on outside of completing PSA/CTA project.
Waiting for the Eddie Bravo seminar at SNEMMA on October 11th. It'll have to be my fix until I can get out to Los Angeles, hopefully by mid-February.
Last night we worked on passing butterfly guard in jits. I am torn quite a bit. Most of the other students don't use that guard much and now they will have more insight into a large part of my game. I enjoy a challenge, but I wasn't quite ready to move onto something new quite yet. I had just started working a new setup to the Jamacian which is similar to the Rubix Cube. (But without as much flexibility.) Not many can move like Jerome can.
What alot of people don't realize about the 10th Planet system is that you do not learn it to the exclusion of traidional jiujitsu technique. 10th Planet is more about concepts and what to do when traditional jits fails. And, when you are training consistently with the same people it does.
Like most things the ability to adapt can often overcome other abilities of other people. Intelligence is helpful, but if you are unable to apply that ability then it is useless. The same can be said of strength, though in jits, raw strength will tend to truimph raw intelligence. At any rate a well rounded jits player will be able to see the openings as they arise and use those opening to achieve a preset plan.
